Stylish vs. Trendy: What’s the Difference and Which Are You?

"You gotta have style. It helps you get down the stairs. It helps you get up in the morning. It's a way of life. Without it, you're nobody. I'm not talking about lots of clothes." -Diana Vreeland

A common question people run into is: what is the difference between something being ‘Stylish’ and something being ‘Trendy’; do you have to be trendy in order to be stylish?

People are so often reeled in by novelty–which is why there will always be a market for trendy apparel–but trends are, by definition, short-lived. When someone is drowning in trends, they aren’t communicating who they truly are. Instead, they are projecting what the world is telling them to be.

That said, embracing trends can be fun(!) and isn’t inherently bad–when we approach them from a place of creativity and originality. When one focuses specifically on being “trendy,” that is when things begin to feel inauthentic. We lose track of what genuinely feels like ourselves when we worry about “fitting in” rather than accepting who we are.

Being stylish means you put care and attention into your clothing, self care, and don’t get eaten up by trends, yet still have a keen sense of what is 'in.’

Being stylish means you have a strong sense of personal style but you are also in touch with what is currently in fashion and strategically consume what genuinely works for you.

The most important takeaway from all of this is understanding the importance of having a point-of-view when it comes to your style, and how you approach the world. Being stylish does not mean you have to be–or that you are–trendy; instead, it means that you have a strong sense of personal style that feels true to you and to your life.
